| Area School to be a Healthier Place Thanks to Cargill
June 28, 2006
Winnipeg— Morris School in Morris was selected by Cargill to receive a $1,000 award as part of the company’s support for school-based nutrition and wellness programs. The funds will help support the In Motion activity days held at the school and for a student field trip.
Melanie Edel and Amanda Mazinke, students in Lauren Edel and Candy Burton’s middle-years classes, submitted the winning essay to a contest sponsored by Cargill titled “How Would My School Use $1,000 to Make Our School a Healthier Place?” The Middle Years Student Council has promoted healthy living by promoting In Motion activity days, where students can actively participate in sporting events and win healthy prizes. The award from Cargill will help provide prizes for the next school year and to sponsor the Middle Years’ students for a healthy living field trip to the University of Manitoba.
“Our students have worked very hard to promote healthy living in our school this year. I am very proud of their efforts and believe that they are having a great impact on the student body as a whole,” said Burton. “Thanks to Cargill, they can continue to implement programs and activities that make our school a healthier place.”
Employees at Cargill’s location in Winnipeg chose the essay from those submitted by teachers participating in the Healthy Balance program. The program, created by Cargill and the News for Students Foundation, provides a curriculum guide, student take-home piece and newspapers during a four-week period to enable students to learn about leading a healthy lifestyle. This was the first year the program was offered in Winnipeg.
“We promote the Healthy Balance program to encourage students and their families to get actively involved in their health and wellness,” said Rob Meijer, director of public affairs for Cargill. “Our children are our future, and this program is one way Cargill can enrich the community where we live and work.”
