Malton Environmental Project Gains Cargill as a Partner
July 15, 2005
TORONTO, Ont. - The Malton Environmental Stewardship Project (MESP), a collaborative project of Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), the City of Mississauga, the Mississauga - Airport Rotary Club and Malton Residents Association, has added a new partner in its efforts to engage the community in revitalizing Mimico Creek and its watershed. Cargill has pledged nearly $6,000 and employee volunteer support to MESP's activities.
"It takes the entire community to protect and preserve Mimico Creek," said Marnie Branfireun, MESP's Project Ecologist. "We hope Cargill's generous contributions and strong corporate citizenship will inspire others to learn about and protect our watersheds so that we can enjoy our city's natural spaces for many generations to come."
MESP works with schools, businesses, organizations and individuals to educate them on issues of water-quality and the value of aquatic habitats, while engaging residents in habitat enhancement activities. Cargill employee volunteers will join with other community members on such projects as cleanups, invasive plant removal, plantings and education programs. The Project's mission is a strong fit to Cargill's Water Matters program, which encourages Cargill employees to be involved in environmental programs through education and action at home, at work and in the community.
"Protecting the environment is important to Cargill and our employees," said Peter Tureski, General Manager for Cargill's case-ready meat facility in Toronto. "Partnering with the Malton Environmental Stewardship Project and the TRCA allows us to actively make a difference in the community where we proudly live and work."
