in need -
LETHBRIDGE, AB – Cargill Animal Nutrition has donated
$5,980 to help sustain the Galbraith school nutrition program
for the remainder of 2004 and the 2005 academic year. These
funds will help provide nourishing breakfasts and snacks to
250 disadvantaged children in grades one through five as part
of the Galbraith Elementary Breakfast and Recess Snack Program.
“Cargill has a long history of giving back to our community,”
says Mark Nelson, Cargill Animal Nutrition’s Business
Development Manager. “We have always believed that everyone
has a responsibility for our children. In supporting Galbraith
Elementary, we are looking to promote social responsibility
in our local community and to nourish the potential of our
youth.”
Across Canada, nearly a third of elementary, and well over
one-in-two secondary school students do not eat breakfast
on a daily basis. Research has shown that a child’s
behaviour, learning capacity, cognitive performance and school
attendance are negatively impacted by inadequate nutrition.
“At Galbraith School, we work to ensure that we are
able to assist in meeting the social, emotional, nutritional,
and financial needs of our families in order to assist in
providing the best learning opportunities for our students,”
said Cynthia Parr, Principal Galbraith Elementary School.
“We cannot thank Cargill Animal Nutrition enough for
sharing in our vision and for their generous support.”
During the 2002-03 academic year, 30 per cent of the children
attending Galbraith school were considered to be living in
poverty. The Galbraith Elementary Breakfast and Recess Snack
Program serves an average of 30 students per day, with the
morning snack program providing nutrition to 120 students
per day.
“We recognize that every year the need for nutrition
programs continues to rise, outweighing the available resources.
Cargill is pleased to be a partner in programming that is
truly dedicated to helping our children learn,” added
Nelson.
Media are invited to attend the donation presentation for
the Galbraith Elementary Breakfast and Recess Snack Program
to be held from 12:45 to 1:15pm on April 8th, 2004, in the
school’s auditorium at 1801-8th Avenue A North in Lethbridge.
