| Cargill Donates Beef To Canadian Food Banks
September 2, 2003
Winnipeg—Food banks across Canada have made their gift
hampers more nutritious with a significant donation by Cargill
Foods. The beef processing facility out of High River, AB,
has provided 200,000 pounds of regular ground beef to the
Canadian Association of Food Banks (CAFB) as part of its national
efforts.
“We realize that the situation in the beef industry
is extremely tragic and with this significant donation by
Cargill Foods, some good has come out of it,” said Charles
Seiden, executive director of the CAFB. “During the
summer months, food banks across the country struggle to keep
their shelves stocked. This significant donation of protein
is especially welcome.”
As part of its ongoing attempts to alleviate the pressures
caused by the BSE crisis facing the industry, Cargill has
been active in working with a number of charity groups to
distribute ground beef to support those in need. Over the
coming weeks, Cargill Foods will work closely with CAFB to
ship product across the country, allowing food banks to provide
hampers with enhanced nutritional value.
“We are very grateful to be a part of this initiative.
Our donation to CAFB is one way to show our continued support
for the beef industry and producers during this difficult
time,” said Robert Meijer, director of public affairs
for Cargill Limited. “While this donation does not help
to solve the BSE situation, it will help stimulate demand
for beef in Canada and go a long way to supporting the food
banks in their commitment to providing nutritional products
for individuals and families in need.”
The Canadian of Association of Food Banks is the umbrella
