| Sun Valley Foods celebrates a safety milestone
August 26, 2003
Jarvis, ON – Today, Sun Valley Foods celebrated “4
Years with No Lost Time Accidents.” The hatchery officially
reached the four-year milestone on Aug. 15, 2003.
The term “lost time” refers to any workplace injury
or illness that results in a person missing time from work
beyond the day of the accident. The most recent Workplace
Safety & Insurance Board of Ontario stats show that in
2001 alone, Ontario experienced 98,359 lost time accidents
in the workplace.
Sun Valley Foods employees work by this statement: No job
is so important and no service is so urgent that we cannot
perform our work safely.
“Safety is a way of life for our stakeholders and their
families. This is not looked at as simply a business achievement.
There is a real sense of ownership and pride because it is
something that each employee has had a part in,” said
Annette Ball, hatchery manager for Sun Valley Foods.
Employees from the hatchery are celebrating with a barbecue,
cooked up by the Jarvis Fire Department. To mark the business’s
safety achievement, Sun Valley Foods will be presenting the
fire department with a donation to go towards the purchase
of a Jaws of Life.
Last month, Sun Valley Foods announced the expansion of its
hatchery, which will significantly increase hatcher and setter
space, as well as provide additional egg storage capacity.
Sun Valley Foods, a division of Cargill Limited, is a major
supplier of processed chicken to the Canadian food service
industry. The business consists of a hatchery in Jarvis, Ontario,
and a chicken processing facility in London, Ontario. Sun
Valley Foods was established in January 2002, when the chicken
processing business was acquired by Cargill Limited from Cuddy
International Corporation.
