Essex, ON - Cargill AgHorizons is pleased to announce a new scholarship in memory of an outstanding citizen of Essex. The Joan Flood Cargill Scholarship has been created in memory of Joan Flood, former Mayor of Essex and Cargill AgHorizons employee.

The $750 scholarship will be awarded annually to a female graduate of Essex District High School who displays solid academic achievement, involvement in the community and volunteerism and has indicated an interest in pursuing a business career.

The award will be announced at Essex District High School's graduation ceremony on June 26, 2002.

Throughout her career with Cargill and through her role as Mayor, Joan was a tireless supporter of the community. Before her death last year, Joan co-ordinated the donation of three new cardiac defibrillators from Cargill to the Town of Essex Fire & Rescue Service.

"We appreciated all that Joan did for our us and for everyone in the community. Through the defibrillator donation, we were able to help ensure an increased level of health and safety for people in the Essex area. The scholarship is an appropriate tribute to someone with a genuine concern for the community," said Essex Fire Chief Mike Quimby.

"Joan was very involved in giving back to the community. She was always encouraging young people, especially women, to strive for their dreams. This scholarship allows this mentoring spirit of giving and encouragement, which was very much a part of Joan, to live on," said Marie Santos, a Cargill AgHorizons employee and former colleague of Flood's.

Cargill AgHorizons contributes to the community through a number of different scholarships, sponsorship programs and charitable donations throughout the country. Cargill AgHorizons is part of Cargill Limited, one of Canada's largest agricultural merchandisers and processors with interests in meat, egg and oilseed processing, feed, salt and fertilizer manufacturing, as well as grain handling and merchandizing.
