Community Engagement

Cargill Citizen Fund

Cargill is committed to being a global leader in corporate citizenship by supporting the people and possibilities that reside in communities where we do business. We define citizenship as providing measurable, positive impact on our communities. The Cargill Citizenship Fund provides strategic grants to organizations serving communities where Cargill has a presence.

Cargill’s Charitable Giving

Globally, Cargill contributes more than $57.5 million a year – two per cent of our pre-tax earnings – to charities and community causes ($2,099,000 of this is spent on Canadian causes). We focus primarily in the areas of health and nutrition, innovation in education, and stewardship of natural resources.

Cargill Cares

As Cargill pursues our purpose of being the global leader in nourishing people, we pay close attention to our role as a corporate citizen. How we do business shapes, in important ways, our relationships with employees, customers and the communities in which we do business.

Cargill is committed to being a global leader in corporate citizenship by nourishing the people and possibilities that reside in communities where we do business. We define citizenship as our total impact on society and the environment. Citizenship includes:

  • Responsible business practices
  • Promoting a sustainable environment
  • Engaging our workforce and ensuring their safety
  • Providing a measurable, positive impact in our communities

To organize community involvement activities, many of our locations have established Cargill Cares Councils, formalized groups of employees that coordinate volunteer programs and direct resources to meet community needs. Following are some examples of how we support communities throughout Canada.

United Way

As part of its efforts to enrich local communities, Cargill and its employees participate in local United Way campaigns raising money to support local health and human service organizations. With the support of more than 8,000 employees in 20 communities throughout Canada, more than $1,300,000 is raised to support local needs each year. More than 92% of the employees at Cargill’s head office in Winnipeg participate in their campaign and for every $1 raised by employees, the company donates $2 to the campaign, a program that is unmatched among Manitoba’s Top 50 corporate donors.

Ronald McDonald House

At Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada, out-of-town families have a home-away-from-home while their children undergo life-saving treatments at nearby hospitals. Cargill employees support the charity through a Voluntary Payroll Deduction Program which allows them to donate directly to the RMH in their community. In addition, the company hosts an annual fundraising golf tournament called FORE! The Houses, with proceeds going directly to all Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada.

Farm Safety

Cargill is deeply connected to the people who live, work and raise families on our nation’s farms. Since 1992, the company has been a leading corporate sponsor for Farm Safety 4 Just Kids (FS4JK), a not-for-profit organization based in Iowa serving communities throughout the United States and Canada. FS4JK’s main objective is to reduce the high number of farm-related injuries and deaths involving children each year. It also aims to increase public awareness and understanding of the hazards to youth on the farm, and promote the skills and resources to make farms safer. Cargill employees are involved with FS4JK through local chapters in their areas.

Cargill has also recently partnered up with the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association to support Farm Safety Days for kids in rural communities throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.

Breakfast for Learning

Breakfast for Learning is a national organization that empowers communities across Canada to start and sustain school nutrition programs in order to enhance learning and the healthy development of children and youth.  Last year alone, they supported over 267,000 children and youth serving over 46,000,000 meals in over 2,300 nutrition programs across Canada.

Canadian Blood Services

Canadian Blood Services is a not-for-profit, charitable organization whose sole mission is to manage the blood and blood products supply for Canadians.  Cargill is a partner in the 'Partners for Life' program and employees are provided time from work to donate blood as a team using the LifeBus service and at various mobile blood donor clinics throughout the country.  Canadian Blood Services also manages the One Match Stem Cell and Marrow network which secures donors for Canadian bone marrow transplant patients and patients abroad.

Cattlemen's Young Leaders

The Cattlemen’s Young Leaders (CYL) Development Program provides industry-specific training and mentorship to assist the Beef industry into the future. This program provides a combination of formal and informal opportunities to learn from existing beef cattle industry leaders and other youth organizations undertaking mentorship opportunities.  Young producers between the ages of 18 and 35 years have a chance to participate in provincial, national and international high level discussions that define the direction and future of the Canadian cattle & beef industry. Providing participants with a chance to explore a potential career choice or rewarding provincial/national producer organization involvement, while gaining essential business connections and learning tools along the way.
